The 2012 holiday season saw the highest rate of online shopping sales in history. It’s estimated that American holiday shoppers spent $42.3 billion online this year, a 14% increase over 2011 and the first time online spending has ever topped $40 billion for that time period.

Cyber Monday was the single biggest shopping day with nearly $1.5 billion in sales, an increase of 17% from the year before. Green Monday, a day which generally sees high numbers of online shoppers (falling on Dec. 10 in 2012), had $1.3 billion in sales. Another mid-December promotional holiday, Free Shipping Day, topped $1 billion in online sales for the first time, a dramatic 76% increase from the year before. The second week of December was the biggest online shopping week with more than $7 billion in sales.

As consumers continue to do more of their shopping online, it will become increasingly valuable to communicate your business’s message to them through online advertising and social media.
